What Should You Do in a Dental Emergency? Guide from Our Dentists in Malvern

September 24, 2026

In pain or worried about a damaged tooth? Our guide explains what counts as a dental emergency, how to book a same-day emergency dentist appointment at our Malvern practice and what to do if you need an emergency dentist when we are closed.

Guide to an Getting an Emergency Dental Appointment

A dental emergency can be worrying, especially when you are in pain and not sure where to turn. At Richmond Dental in Malvern, we aim to offer same-day emergency dentist appointments for patients experiencing pain, swelling or dental trauma. In this guide, we explain what counts as a dental emergency, how to book an emergency dentist appointment with us and what to do if you need help when we are closed.

How to Tell If You Need an Emergency Dentist

Not every dental problem needs urgent care, but some issues should not wait. You should book an emergency dental appointment if you have:

  • Severe toothache or sensitivity
  • A cracked, broken or chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth (dental avulsion)
  • Swelling in your gums, face or jaw
  • An abscess or infection causing pain
  • A lost crown or filling with sharp edges
  • Bleeding that will not stop

Not Sure If It Is Urgent?

If you are unsure, give us a call on 01684 561249. Our Malvern dentist will listen to what is happening and advise if you need urgent dental care. It is always better to ask than to sit at home and worry.

Getting an Emergency Dentist Appointment in Malvern

Call Early in the Day

We keep dedicated emergency slots each day so urgent problems can be treated quickly. We only have a certain number of emergency dentistry appointments, so we ask anyone with an urgent problem to phone the practice as early as possible in the morning. This gives us the best chance of seeing you on the same day.

Registered and Non-Registered Patients

If you are registered with us, we will try our best to help you on the same day. You do not need to be one of our patients to get help, either. Non-registered dental patients are welcome on a private basis for same-day emergency care, so you can still reach out to our team when you need it most.

What Happens at an Emergency Appointment?

Tooth Pain Relief and Assessment

Your emergency dental appointment is all about assessing the problem and easing your discomfort. Our dentist will look at what is causing the issue and focus on relieving your pain first.

Planning Your Next Steps

If further treatment is needed, you may be asked to come back for additional appointments. We will talk you through the most effective treatment and plan the next steps with you. We offer a full range of NHS and private treatments, including dental fillings, root canal treatment, crowns and extractions, so your ongoing care can be carried out here at our practice. You can see our NHS and private charges on our fees page.

Emergency Dental Care Outside Our Opening Hours

Our practice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am until 5pm. We are not a 24-hour service, but there is still help available when we are closed.

Call NHS 111 if you need urgent care outside our opening hours. They will advise you and, if necessary, direct you to an available NHS emergency dentist in your area. You can also get in touch with us, and we will respond and arrange an appointment as soon as we reopen.
