A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are typically made from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal, depending on the location of the tooth and your personal preferences. Once fitted, the crown fully encases the tooth, providing a natural-looking and functional restoration.
The process of receiving a dental crown typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, our dental team will carefully prepare the damaged tooth by removing any decayed or weakened portions. Impressions will be taken to ensure that your crown is a perfect fit. If needed, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth until the permanent one is ready.
Once the custom crown is created and fitted, it will be securely placed over the prepared tooth. The result is a durable, natural-looking restoration that functions just like your original tooth, allowing you to bite, chew, and smile with confidence.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and natural look. It’s often used to protect cracked teeth, support large fillings, or cover dental implants. At Richmond Dental, our crowns are carefully crafted from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal to blend naturally with your smile. The treatment usually involves two appointments, one to prepare the tooth and another to fit the permanent crown. With good care, a dental crown can last for many years, helping you eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
Dental crowns usually last between 10 and 15 years, though with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, they can often last 20 years or more. How long your crown lasts will depend on the material used, your daily care routine, and habits such as grinding your teeth or biting hard foods. At Richmond Dental, we use high-quality materials and expert techniques to ensure your crowns look natural and stand the test of time. To help your crown last longer, brush and floss each day, avoid very hard or sticky foods, and see your dentist regularly. If your crown ever feels loose, worn, or uncomfortable, get in touch with Richmond Dental for a professional assessment.
A dental crown is fitted over two comfortable visits to your dentist at Richmond Dental. During the first appointment, the tooth is gently shaped, and an impression or digital scan is taken to create a custom-made crown while a temporary one protects the tooth. At the second visit, the permanent crown is carefully checked for fit, colour, and comfort before being securely cemented in place. The dentist then makes small adjustments to ensure your bite feels natural. Once fitted, your new crown looks and functions just like a natural tooth, restoring your smile with lasting confidence.
