How Often Should You See a Dental Hygienist? Signs You're Overdue a Clean

September 27, 2026

Not sure when you last had your teeth cleaned? Our guide explains how often to see a dental hygienist, what a scale and polish involves and the signs you're overdue a visit to our Malvern practice.

Why is Dental Hygiene Important for Healthy Teeth and Gums?

Plaque and tartar can build up on your teeth even with regular brushing, which is why hygienist visits are such an important part of looking after your smile. At Richmond Dental in Malvern, our experienced dental hygienists help patients keep their teeth and gums healthy. In this guide, we explain how often you should book in, what a scale and polish involves and the signs that it might be time for a clean.

How Often Do You Need a Hygienist Appointment?

For most people, we recommend booking a scale and polish every six months as part of your regular dental care. Regular hygienist appointments help prevent problems such as gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. They also give our team the chance to spot any early signs of trouble before they turn into something bigger.

Our Scale and Polish Service

What Is a Scale and Polish?

A scale and polish is a professional clean that removes plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. It has two simple steps. Scaling carefully clears away plaque and hardened tartar, especially around the gum line where it is hard to reach with a toothbrush. Polishing then uses a special paste to smooth your teeth and lift any remaining surface stains, leaving them feeling fresh and clean. The whole appointment usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

Does a Scale and Polish Hurt?

A scale and polish is normally a comfortable treatment. Most patients feel only a light vibration or a gentle tickling as plaque and tartar are removed, and we use modern ultrasonic equipment to keep the clean thorough yet gentle. Your teeth may feel slightly sensitive for a short while afterwards, which is perfectly normal.

How Much Is a Scale and Polish in the UK?

At our practice, we keep our scale and polish cost clear, with no hidden charges. For NHS dental patients, a scale and polish is included in a Band 1 course of treatment at £27.90 when it is clinically needed. For private dental care patients, a hygienist appointment costs £53 per session, and you can add on Airflow for £15. Hygienist appointments are also included in our membership. You can find the full breakdown on our fees page.

6 Signs You're Overdue a Clean

It is easy to lose track of time between appointments. Here are some signs that it may be time to book in with our scale and polish dentist:

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
  • Your gums look red or swollen
  • You have noticed bad breath that keeps coming back
  • Your teeth have surface stains or no longer feel smooth
  • It has been more than six months since your last clean

When Gum Problems Need Extra Care

Swelling, redness and bleeding can all be signs of gum disease. During your hygiene appointment, we carry out a thorough assessment with a focus on your gum health, so any problems can be picked up early. If more support is needed, our Periodontal Treatment service can help with early-stage gum disease and more advanced periodontitis.

Caring for Your Gums at Home

Alongside your treatment, our hygienists will share tailored advice on brushing and flossing techniques and recommend suitable oral care products. Good habits at home, together with regular scaling and polishing, make a real difference to your long-term oral health.
